The Bavarian Inn– Located in the nearby town of Shepherdstown, and praised for their solar and electric car environmental contributions. Things to Do – Orr’s Farm Market – My favorite thing to do in Martinsburg was to hang at the barnyard with the animals at Orr’s Farm Market, cuddle their sheep (when he let me), and pick my own fruits like strawberries and cherries. Riding my tractor chariot to and fro was so fun. Our meals were made with their fresh vegetables for the time we were visiting. They had so many great options. Great for singles, family, or couples. It’s just a ball!
Alise’s Favorites and Suggestions –
Route 9 – Dedicated walking and bike path parallel to Highway Nine, 10 miles of soft paved asphalt with at least one 45-degree hill and four vehicle cross streets, frequented by the local bike club (no shade or bathrooms, go to Black Dog Coffee for water refills)
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park Ride to or from entry points near Martinsburg; while many parts of the C&O are not suitable for thin road bike tires, at least from the Shepherd’s town (and a bit before) entry point to Seneca boat ramp just before lock 24 (22 miles before the trail ends in Washington) it is a well packed and sufficient for my road tires
Western Maryland Rail Trail – The trail is a dedicated paved trail, but in spots there are tree roots that have pushed up the asphalt, so caution is required; note that it runs parallel to the Chesapeake & Ohio Trail with the ability, in places, to cross between them
